Guardian Unlimited has Torchwood: Miracle Day – episode four, what's been great about Miracle Day is that it's such a tease. Apart from the constant, expositionary detail about the consequences of the miracle, which we have now worked out is the purpose of Dr Vera, nothing particularly bad has happened yet. And that's where episode four comes into play. It's like, "Boston has cholera, but hey, we got to film on Venice Beach!" We know, because we're told by the next week trailer for episode five, that this is the end of the LOLZ for the time being....

IGN TV has Torchwood: Miracle Day - "Escape to L.A." Review, one of Children of Earth's strengths was that it only had five episodes to tell its story. It was a tightly packed narrative with limited room for the story to lose its way. Rusell T. Davies and crew managed to do an adequate amount of character development in those five episodes despite the limited screen time they had to work with. In Miracle Day, the writers have a little more room to breath and explore the emotional impact that the event is having on the world and the members of Torchwood.....

Shadowlocked has Torchwood S4e4 review, oh, poor Oswald Danes. Someone is trying to steal his spotlight, and worse, they’re just as bad as he is. Enter Ellis Hartley Monroe, a pastiche of Sarah Palin and Michelle Bachmann. She has made a name for herself by condemning those who have been affected by the miracle with her “Dead is Dead” campaign.....

The A.V. Club has "Escape To LA" , "for the sake of context, I figure I should rip off the band-aid and say that I think Torchwood: Miracle Day is kind of terrible through three episodes. If someone I know were to ask me my opinion of the series, I don’t know what positive things I would say about it: the plot lacks subtlety, the pacing is nonexistent, the casting is incredibly uneven, the direction has been unimpressive, and the interesting premise has been rendered so dramatically small that it holds no weight whatsoever...."

Blogcritics.org has TV Review: Torchwood: Miracle Day – "Escape to LA", so the Torchwood team has moved to Los Angeles, more specifically Venice Beach, hot on the trail of the Phicorp pharma baddies. But is it really as simple as a pharmaceutical company (or companies), perhaps in cahoots with parts of the U.S. government wanting to make more and more profits? Naah. This is Torchwood, silly, and nothing is ever quite as simple as it seems.....

John Barrowman, who plays Captain Jack Harkness in Doctor Who spin-off Torchwood, said a decision to make just five episodes for the new series felt like a punishment.

The programme's popularity has seen it move from BBC3 to BBC2 and most recently to BBC1 for next week's third series, which is a single story, Children of Earth, told over five episodes.

Barrowman told the Radio Times: "I'm going to get a little political and I'll probably get into trouble for it."

"We were the most successful show on BBC3, ever. We moved to BBC2 because the ratings were so good; the ratings were great again (averaging 3.1 million) and we were beating shows that had been on BBC2 for a long time.

"The decision was made to go to BBC1 - and then we were cut. From 13 episodes down to five.

"The five episodes, the mini-series as I call it, are incredible - I have no doubt about that - but personally, I felt like we were being punished.

"Other shows move from BBC3 and 2 to 1, and they don't get cut. So why are we? It felt like every time we moved we had to prove ourselves."

The show's writer and creator Russell T Davies defended the changes. He told the magazine: "Part of us thought: 'We could do another 13 episodes, we've learnt how to do that, and the second series was better than the first'. But why not change it?

"I know if this was America, they'd try to keep it going for seven years, doing the same thing every week. And BBC America, who show Torchwood, are furious that we've changed the format. But they're not our paymasters.

"It's the British audience we make these for. And I don't think audiences are remotely lost by a change in format."

A BBC spokesman said: "We wanted to create a powerful sense of event when the show came to BBC1 and so talked with the show makers about a story that could run over five consecutive days.

"This is something we have only ever done before with Criminal Justice and Occupation and is something very special that we hope viewers will enjoy."

The new series airs from Monday, July 6, to Friday, July 10, at 9pm each night.

The third series of Torchwood hasn't even aired yet but the next one is prepared. And there's some news about the upcoming episodes...

Last night saw a preview screening of the the first installment of Torchwood: Children of Earth at the National Film Theatre. The episode, titled Day One, was followed by a 'Q & A' with the show's creator, Russell T Davies.

During the session, Davies revealed that the fourth series is "ready to go" but is entirely dependent on how the third series performs. The showrunner also revealed that he would be willing to do the show for the next ten years and wanted more crossovers with its 'parent' show, Doctor Who. RTD also added that The Doctor is mentioned in the last episode of Torchwood: Children of Earth.

So far, early reviews - mainly posted on the social networking site, Twitter - are very positive with words like "awesome" and "brilliant" being bandied about whilst others have suggested that the opening episode is the best hour of Torchwood so far.

No definite date has been set for the UK transmission but Torchwood: Children of Earth will start broadcasting in North America on July 20h. The DVD/Blu-Ray release is set for July 27th.

In this afternoon's opener, written by Anita Sullivan, PC Andy arrests a teenager for shoplifting and thinks it's going to be a routine case. He then spots the weapon she is carrying and decides to call in Torchwood. When Gwen questions the girl, she remembers her name, but little else,and, when she speaks, it is a strange mix of English and Scandinavian but with a Cardiff accent. The team is later faced with a dilemma whenthe girl's blood test results come back.

John Barrowman stars as Captain Jack Harkness, Eve Myles as Gwen Cooper and Gareth David-Lloyd as Ianto Jones.

Plan for Torchwood exhibition in Cardiff Bay

TORCHWOOD fans may soon get the chance to sit in Captain Jack’s swivel chair, if plans for an exhibition for the Dr Who spin-off are given the go-ahead.

Visitors to Cardiff Bay already flock to the spot near the Wales Millennium Centre, where, in the hit BBC TV show, a paving slab lowers the alien fighters to their secret lair.

But no amount of jumping up and down can make the real-life slab budge and frustrated fans have to content themselves with taking a quick picture.

Under the plans put before city planners, fans could get their sci-fi fix in a disused office building on Bute Crescent, in the middle of the Bay.

The Torchwood Experience concept comes from the hugely-successful Doctor Who Experience in the nearby Red Dragon Centre, which counted 50,000 visitors in its first month after opening in 2005.

That has now been rolled out to cities all over the UK from Glasgow to Land’s End and its makers, Experience Design and Management, has applied to Cardiff council for a Torchwood spin-off.

Plans seen by the Echo show the exhibition would be organised over two levels, with a ground-floor entrance through a recreation of the circular “Hub” doorway.

This would lead visitors into a reconstruction of the Torchwood team’s stomping-ground, complete with Ianto’s area and a glass-sided replica of that office belonging to Captain Jack Harkness.

Fans can recreate Toshiko’s death scene in the autopsy room, try out Captain Jack’s weapons in the armoury or turn up the heat in the interrogation room.

Upstairs will host a replica of the Cardiff Bay water sculpture and a working lift to take you into the hub downstairs.

The exhibition’s planners also hope to borrow creatures and props from the BBC and fans will be able to come face-to-face with a Weevil and try out various props.

But being kept under wraps is the main feature of the exhibition, a huge monster which will feature in the next series of the sci-fi show.

Speaking on the Doctor Who Experience website, head designer of Experience Design and Management, Martin Wilkie, said: “A Torchwood Exhibition would be a great addition to the Bay area. We have looked at several sites for a Torchwood Exhibition but we are hoping that this one might be available soon.

“The appeal of Torchwood brings many visitors to Cardiff Bay, especially to see the Torchwood Water Tower.

“The building we are hoping to use for the Torchwood Exhibition is near this famous TV landmark.”

Cardiff council is currently reviewing the application for the exhibition.

The Torchwood Institute has John Barrowman is not able to attend Torchsong Chicago, John sustained a very nasty injury to his left ankle yesterday. An MRI scan has confirmed that he has completely ruptured all the ligaments around his ankle. He cannot bear any weight on his foot and the doctor has said he is not medically fit to undertake long distance flights or his planned work. He must rest at home with his foot elevated for much of the time....

TORCHWOOD star Eve Myles is looking forward to the arrival of her first baby – by craving endless amounts of potatoes and chocolate!

The stunning brunette is 15 weeks’ pregnant with her first child, and says the experience is the best thing that’s ever happened to her.

But while she’s managed to dodge morning sickness, the 30-year-old actress has been suffering from some unusual cravings – for mashed spuds and Cadbury’s Creme Eggs.

She told Wales on Sunday that she and her long-term partner, actor Bradley Freegard, have already chosen names for a boy and a girl, but they will be keeping them under wraps.

“We’re so excited it’s ridiculous,” says Eve, who’s originally from Ystradgynlais but now lives in Cardiff.

“We have been pining and pining for a baby for about three years but it’s never been the right time. It’s just been work after work after work.

“But we thought it’s never going to be the right time and we didn’t want to turn around in 10 years and go ‘why didn’t we do it?’ so we did. We are very lucky. It’s a blessing.

“We have got names already, which we picked before I was even pregnant and we will stick with them.”

The couple have chosen not to find out the sex of their baby, which is due on November 6.

BBC America have confirmed to End Of Show that Torchwood will hit screens in July, in both the US and UK. In the UK the show will move to BBC One. The show is in 5 segments, with one airing each night of the week.

Writer Russell T Davies says “this series is one big serial and the most ambitious story we’ve ever made, and we’ve got plenty of surprises in store.”

Following the huge success of Torchwood: Lost Souls, which was broadcast as part of Radio 4's Big Bang season last year, the Torchwood cast are set to return to the airwaves in three brand new Torchwood radio plays.

Three 45 minute episodes will air in Radio 4's Afternoon Play slot at 2.15pm. The three new radio plays bridge the gap between Torchwood: Lost Souls and the upcoming Torchwood: Children of Earth television series.

The episodes feature Captain Jack (John Barrowman), Gwen (Eve Myles) and Ianto (Gareth David-Lloyd) and have been recorded over the last two weeks. Torchwood star Eve Myles has announced that she is expecting her first child.

The 31-year-old Welsh actress decided to try for a baby after filming a new five-part special of the Doctor Who spin-off, Children of the Earth, which airs on BBC1 later this year.

"I've wanted to do this for such a long time, but I kept getting job after job after job," said Eve, who plays former police officer Gwen Cooper in the cult series.

"I thought, if I put this off any more I'm going to be 65. My partner and I decided this year was going to be the year, and we were blessed that it happened so quickly.

"It's the best thing that ever happened to me – we're over the moon."

Eve, who is three and a half months' pregnant, joked about the fact that her character Gwen gave birth in series two – to an alien.

"We went for a scan and my mum was there," she recalled. "And my mum went: 'No, it's not a Nostrovite! It's a real Welsh human!' But of course it crosses my mind – I hope it's not an alien!"

Eve added that motherhood will not make her quit her role in Torchwood.

"I hope we get a new series," she said. "I'd really like to play Gwen as a mother. It's not like I have to really save the world – I just have to sit in make-up!"
